Telangana Formation Day is observed annually on June 2 to commemorate the official creation of India’s 29th state, Telangana, in 2014. The demand for a separate Telangana state dates back to the 1950s following the merger of the Hyderabad state with Andhra Pradesh. After years of peaceful protests and political negotiations, the Indian Parliament passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act in 2014, officially bifurcating Andhra Pradesh and creating Telangana on June 2. K. Chandrashekar Rao was sworn in as the first Chief Minister of the new state.
